Theoretical Times

I'm pretty amused that this week I have been working and 'nudged' to configure the theory selection for my thesis. I had practically left it at the back of my mind as I thought perhaps a conceptual framework is succinct. However, during the latest meeting with my supervisor, he probed the matter. I understand that choosing a theory is like applying lenses, you change the way you see things/ object/ ideas. What I have yet to understand is the part where we need to shift from macro view, to micro, and so on so forth.

Perhaps I've been burrowing in the rabbit hole for some time already. Digging through the materials, reading, annotating, and sometimes questioning myself 'why on earth are you doing this?'..haha. But my supervisor has an important point: I need to be able to view things using helicopter view.

Second, this week I attended an online workshop on Atlas ti. The global pandemic had saved me hundreds in terms of transportation costs, may reach thousands even. The instructor went over aspects of research including theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Both TF and CF can be used together or separately, based on the assessed need of the research. He mentioned that using a TF is like seeing the forest, but CF is seeing the tree (or part of a tree).

Third, I was watching Tara Brabazon's vlog on Chaos yesterday . She went over the chaotic nature of the higher education and some uncertainties ahead. It was then followed by several strategies for postgraduates and also members of faculty. Despite having more papers published each year, the nature of the higher education has a lot to work on, for instance, short term-ism, and overemphasis on university-industry relations. We have ceased to work on new theories , as it is usually deemed as not productive. Yet, the current situation which we are in now: the clash between a global pandemic, an economic slowdown, and rising civil unrest needs a theoretical purview. Working separately in silos might not be adequate to foresee future challenges and opportunities.

I guess it's a good time to step back and reevaluate the way we conduct our daily matters, and also the we way we see things.
